Already in 1078, according to tradition, the Bavarian Duke Heinrich saw the advantages provided by the natural terrain for the construction of a fortress in order to leave a garrison here at the Engadin boundary. However, the oldest documentary evidence dates from the year 1263 and describes 'a castrum Luech in Vinstermincz'. In 1770, as a consequence of the customs reforms, Finstermünz lost its importance - Alfinstermünz now simply housed a roadside tavern.
In 1854 a newly constructed road from Pfunds (AT) to Nauders (AT) marked a further decline in its use and significance. The project partners have as their goal the wish to reopen the historical mountain pass hermitage for the interested visitor. This necessitates a renovation and restoration of historically extremely valuable architectural elements.. With the creation of an 'Historical Experience World Altfinstermünz' one aims to attract the interest of a wider group of people than merely the circle of those historically interested.
At the present time the old site can be visited, renovation and extension work is fully under way and should be completed in the next few years. Once a week there is a guided hike to Alfinstermünz, in which the significance of this spectacular site is brought home to you (see Infobox).
Inclined elevator (planned)
The inclined elevator will connect Hochfinstermünz with the mountain defile complex. Already the journey with the inclined elevator is an experience itself - one plunges into a different world, as it were, and takes part in an historical journey through time.
Gastronomic centre - tavern in the Finstermünz (planned)
On the socket of the former hostelry building, only the foundation walls of which remain today, a gastronomic centre is planned. In a combination between old and new the framework of an old barn is to form the mantle of the building while the interior is fully modernized. In this tavern the large number of extant paintings, engravings and old views of Altfinstermünz will be presented to the visitor.
Children's playground and Legend World (planned)
Embedded between the gate tower , gastronomic centre, chapel and the Inn river a leisure and recreational area with children's playground is planned for visitors. The playground will not display the usual games equipment, but will have as its theme the figures of the fairy world and legends associated with the Rhaetian area of Switzerland.
Natural cave - multi-vision area (planned)
After completing the archaeological excavations it is planned to use the natural cave as a multi-vision room. Central themes in this area are trade and travel in the course of history. Here films tell the story of Altfinstermünz, the military conflicts, life at the customs stations and the experiences of the smugglers. The mysterious ambience of the place is emphasized by the light and sound installations.
Gate Tower - museum and exhibitions (planned)
From the architectonic and ancient monument preservation aspects the most important tasks are the vertical development of the gate tower as well as a meaningful inclusion of the residual wall ruins scattered around the cave entrance. In this part of the building which forms the centre of the complex exhibition and representational rooms will be situated.
Sigmundseck and Rock path (planned)
In the mountain defile Sigmundseck has the primary function of a vantage point. From the ground floor the visitor looks out over the entire range of buildings and obtains a general picture of the historic dimensions of the whole. Sigmundseck can be reached via an approximately 30- metre long, natural rock path. Steadily rising it leads from the natural cave as far as Sigmundseck. This portion of the building was and is accessible only via this path.
Bridge tower and guard-room (planned)
The bridge tower is actually a unique landmark here which is very interesting for the visitor. The tower in the water, originally fitted out with a drawbridge facing the Swiss side, is a sort of reception room where one greets and says good-bye to visitors to the mountain defile buildings; however, a major theme is to be the setting up of an early modern period guard-room.
