Alpine Dairy

We Samnauner are particularly proud of our local mountain cheese. The alpine dairy produces, from healthy Samnaun milk which  comes through the pipeline from the alp down to the valley, a palette of different kinds of mountain cheeses. In order to give our guests an insight into the production of cheese, the first alpine show dairy was opened in 1992. It is worth a visit.

The name 'senne' mean 'alpine pasture' so a 'sennerei' describes a cheese dairy in the Alps. And this one is the home of the famous Samnauner mountain cheese and the 'mutschlis' (fresh baked rolls) in various  flavours.

The Samnaun cheese dairy was originally founded in 1960 by 30 farmers of the valley on a co-operative basis. The main function was the central processing of the milk delivered by the Samnaun farmers, and sometime later came the task of marketing the products. The scope and the economic conditions have undergone an enormous change since the 60s. Thus today you find here a food store - naturally with a large cheese counter, a show dairy and an alpine-hut enterprise all under one roof. It goes without saying that the whole range of cheeses from our own production are on sale. Samnauner cheese is extremely popular both with guests and the local inhabitants - the dairy cheese is a genuine item 'Made in Samnaun'. The milk as the basis for the many dairy products (diverse kinds of cheese, yoghurt, butter, etc.) comes directly via a pipeline from the Alp Bella, the home pasture of the Samnaun cows, into the dairy. If in the summer you should happen to be in the vicinity of the Alp Bella, make a stop there and have this fascinating system explained to you. Once a week in the season guided tours of the enterprise are held in which you can see for yourselves the unique quality of the products made.
