Olympic Winter Games 2026 in Livigno and Bormio: Travel Advice for Getting to Samnaun

In February 2026, competitions for the Winter Olympics will take place in Livigno and Bormio. For Graubünden, this means more traffic, especially in the Lower Engadine and Val Müstair, as part of the journey will be through Switzerland.

To ensure that visitors, locals, and local businesses can continue to get around as easily as possible, the canton of Graubünden is implementing a traffic management plan that includes Park+Ride, a shuttle system, and checkpoints. The measures will be in effect starting Saturday, February 7, 2026.

When can increased traffic be expected?

The highest traffic volume is expected during the competition days: February 6 to 22, 2026. Increased traffic is also expected during the week before (February 2 to 5, 2026). Travel days on weekends may be particularly heavy.

Which axes are particularly affected?

The focus is on the access road to Livigno via the Munt la Schera tunnel. This area is considered a bottleneck, which is why traffic jams can occur along the access routes. The access roads in the Lower Engadine around Zernez and towards Val Müstair (Ofen Pass) may be particularly affected. The Vereina–Lower Engadine route is also relevant when traffic heading towards the Engadine is backed up.

What does this mean for access to Samnaun?

Samnaun remains accessible. Depending on the time of day, travel times on the Swiss Vereina – Lower Engadine – Martina route may be longer if additional traffic overlaps with normal winter traffic.

An alternative route via Austria (Landeck – Pfunds – Spiss – Samnaun) may be advisable, especially if traffic jams are reported in the Lower Engadine. The current situation on the day of travel is decisive.

The longest waiting times are expected on Saturdays, February 7 and 14, 2026. At the Vereina car transport service, waiting times of up to three hours are possible during peak periods. Please check the current situation at https://strassen.gr.ch/ before departure and find out about the official measures taken by the canton of Graubünden.

The transit vignette makes it easier to continue your journey. It is free of charge and intended for all guests who are not traveling to Livigno/Bormio.
