Martin Schmid grew up in the municipality of Splügen and completed his law studies at the University of St. Gallen in 1995. He was admitted to the bar in the canton of Graubünden in 1997. In 2005, he obtained his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen. Between 1994 and 2002, Martin Schmid was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Graubünden. In 2002, he was elected to the government of the Canton of Graubünden, first heading the Department of Justice, Security and Health (2003-2007), and later the Department of Finance and Communities (2007-2011). In 2011 he was elected to the Council of States as a representative of the Canton of Graubünden and relinquished his mandate as a member of the government. In addition to his office as a member of the Council of States, Martin Schmid has worked as a lawyer in the law firm KUNZ SCHMID Rechtsanwälte und Notare AG in Chur and as a member of the board of directors in various companies since 2012. Martin Schmid is the father of three children and lives with his family in Chur.
