Three days, three worlds: Samnaun kicks off the summer with sport, motoring and leisure
Trail running amongst alpine roses and high-altitude mountain passes
The Terra Raetica Trails – Tour Festival kicked off the sporting programme on Thursday. The five-day event took participants through five regions in the border triangle of Switzerland, Austria and Italy; the third stage took place in Samnaun. In sunny weather and pleasant temperatures, 300 runners tackled the technically demanding course.
The 14.3-kilometre loop, with 1,212 metres of elevation gain, featured a high proportion of trail running. From Samnaun village, the route led via Pra Grond and the Märchenweg into Val Musauna and Val Chamins. After the Stammerjoch at 2,657 metres above sea level, it passed the Stammer Lakes to Rossboden, climbed to the Rotes Seeli at 2,573 metres above sea level, and returned to the village via the Val Maisas. Blooming mountain meadows, alpine roses and sweeping views accompanied the runners through the impressive high-mountain landscape.
Stephan Permann won the Samnaun stage in 1:47:51, ahead of Dominik Schüssler in 1:48:17 and Collin Van Almkerk in 1:48:48. In the women’s race, Lisa Madlener took the win in 2:06:27; Lien Van Ballaer followed in 2:12:23 ahead of Nina Kreisherr in 2:14:39.
The Kids Trail made its debut. Fourteen children set off on the circuit designed especially for them and were each presented with a gift at the finish line. As the competitive tension eased in the finish area, a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere and views of the surrounding mountains marked the end of the day.
130 moving historical artefacts in the village
On Friday, the scene shifted from the trail to the Alpine road. 130 classic cars taking part in the 17th Arlberg Classic Car Rally stopped for lunch in the village of Samnaun. The vehicles, built between 1914 and 1979, represented 32 different makes; the proportion of pre-war cars was strikingly high. The oldest vehicle had been built as far back as 1914.
The second stage of the rally was named ‘Via Claudia Augusta’ and partly followed the route of the historic Roman road. From Lech, it led through the Lech Valley over the Hahntennjoch to Imst, continuing into the Pitz Valley and over the Pillerhöhe. After a detour into the Kaunertal valley, the teams reached Samnaun. They then travelled through the upper Inn Valley to Landeck and back to Lech via the Stanzertal valley and the Arlberg Pass.
In the village, the shapes, colours and engine sounds spanning several decades of motoring history proved a major attraction. The friendly competition focused not on top speed, but on precision, driving pleasure, discovery and a shared enthusiasm for historic vehicles. During the lunch stop, participants had time to explore Samnaun and the duty-free town.
Gästerekord beim Gipfelgenuss
The 12th Samnaun Summit Delights event brought the culinary festivities to a close on Saturday. With 500 visitors, a new attendance record was set. On the sun terrace of the Panorama Restaurant Sattel, at 2,488 metres above sea level, the sounds of the alphorn, personal encounters and carefully prepared dishes came together to create an atmospheric start to the mountain summer.
Ten restaurants from Samnaun and three local producers showcased their culinary specialities. The dishes were served against a panoramic backdrop that included, amongst others, Piz Ot, Stammerspitz, Muttler and Piz Motnair. Many guests returned to the event once again and made the most of the day to sample the food, chat and relax.
